Disney animator Heidi Gilbert recently put together this original animatic based on the Wicked musical in an attempt to see about having it done as an animated movie.

I genuinely love seeing this get passed around because:
a) I love Wicked
b) I want this
I can’t not share this. This would be such a fantastic 2d cell-animated movie (with 3d/computer support for the complicated scenes). …I would especially love it if they go for the water-color style of “Lilo and Stitch”, or at least emulate some of the old-school Disney techniques. But those are my biases showing.
We all know it could be awesome. This scene is impressive, lovely, and chilling - and it’s just a mock-up. It’s powerful, and it’s only sketches to show the rough animation sequence. Forget “The Lion King - 3D” and the upcoming “Wreck-It Ralph” (also 3D and computer animated), and whatever other remake/rehash/trend-spotting movie franchise currently underway (while, yes, I acknowledge that this story is from a book that became a play based off a book series, a movie, and many other derivative works). ”Wicked” is different.
This story deserves the energy and attention of the major animation houses.
Do it, Disney. Consider it enlightened self-interest (ie: there’s a lot of money to be made here).
